Ah, but would a Sputnik actually sound like?
Perhaps not quite like this effort from Russian / Ukranian based duo who rather than abstract computer noises make an absorbingly tuneful set of tunes.
Despite titles like ‘Shades of the Cosmos’ it’s decidedly rooted in earthly influences – unsurprising as it involves the likes of Graham Bonnar of shoegaze legends Swervedriver, whose spiralling guitar conjures up images of retro boosters and interstellar travel.
However, ‘Overdrive’ is a fine piece of electronic pop. OMD’s Malcolm Holmes provides a remix as does Damon Albarn’s producer Fran Ashcroft, whose remix of ‘Light Scheme’ has more of spacey quality than the rest of the album. Perhaps this is the true sound of Sputnik?
