‘Les Dirigeants Africains’, taken from Smod’s self-titled third album, cannot fail to lift your spirits. Produced by Manu Chao, his influence is inevitably felt, but this is certainly no bad thing.
Each vocalist has his own discernible style, from smooth, melodic singing to steady, strolling rap. The French language adds a tenderness and seductiveness that might be missing from an English language version. Bright, crystal-clear acoustic guitar creates an enchanting refrain, while the rolling rhythm guitar provides the lilting pace.
This is a wonderfully uplifting song, cool and calm. Each instrument and voice is given a chance to stand alone and prove its worth, and part of ‘Les Dirigeants Africains’ particular beauty stems from their confidence in its simplicity.
