Returning with their third album, With Our Heads In The Clouds And Our Hearts In The Fields, Belgium based duo Sleepingdog fuse delicate ambience with the haunting vocals of Chantal Acda.
The pair combine a variety of instrumentation including a piano part on ‘Polish Love Song’, that has a vague resemblance in mood and character to Philip Glass’ ‘Metamorphosis One’. The same instrument is used to a more euphoric effect on, ‘He Loved To See the World Through His Camera’, midway through the record, pulling away from the melancholic tones of the opening numbers. With the inclusion of an acoustic guitar and increasingly hearty vocals, ‘From Where it Was’ edges towards a folk song and is perhaps the most heartfelt track on the record, at least at face value.
Penultimate track ‘Horse Lullaby’ is a swelling crescendo with Acda’s airy vocals supported by a huge bass boom giving the song a depth so far undiscovered. A fitting conclusion to the album and standout track of the record is ‘Scary Movie’. Beautifully delicate, moody and deeply poignant while too portraying a stick-in-your-mind quality that rounds the album off perfectly.
