Savage Sound System

(Savage)

Respect for starting their EP with ‘Dolph Lundgren vs Todd Rungren’, even if it is 36s long, but SSS are an unconventional bunch - with much in the way of short and sweet pieces of electronica and triphop and oddball instrumentation (”ansafone”, “baby accordion” etc). ‘We Found His Bones on the Beach’ is just kicking off nicely when it shudders to a halt 34 secs in, and ‘Gimme The Bad News’ mixes up electro and trad and could be Tom Waits and Johnny Cash accompanied by Ivor Cutler for a sea shanty. As you can tell this is no ordinary CD and you’ll not be hearing any of this on your radio any time soon, which is probably the way that SSS like it. However, that said, ‘Leaves and’ is an almost Portisheady triphop affair with lovely clear vocals, while ‘These Demented Lands’ might be a horror movie soundtrack in minature. Very clever, as is ‘Low Paid Savage Whisper’ which ends the CD, an Oriental-themed repetitive piece which could easily be soundtracking a mobile phone ad anytime soon. Well, if they could be bothered chasing the commercial dream, that is… but somehow, you suspect that’snot on the agenda.
