RM Hubbert
First and Last (Ubisano)
RM Hubbert paid his dues on the Glasgow DIY scene as a member of El Hombre Trajeado in the mid nineties. That will probably only mean something to a select few, but apparently the great John Peel liked the band enough to invite them to perform three separate live sessions for him during their lifespan.
In any case ‘First and Last’ is Hubbert’s first record as a solo artist, and it’s mightily impressive. The entire album is made-up of solo flamenco guitar compositions, but this is far from being an indulgent display of soulless technical virtuosity. On the contrary, this is an album of grace and emotive depth, with tracks like ‘Jumphang’ and ‘For Maria’ displaying a sweeping romanticism, while ‘Hey There Mr Bone’ and ‘Temple Circa 89’ have a more playful, joyous quality.
Hubbert has spent considerable time studying samba, flamenco and taiko guitar styles and there is no doubt he is one of the most technically accomplished musicians I have heard in quite a while. However, he clearly understands the importance of space in music, and there are many moments on this album which are minimalist in composition. Perhaps it’s this understated quality which makes ‘First and Last’ such a beguiling listen.
