Ten Pound Bag / Under Your Colours
(...)
On first listen, this is so laid back it literally sounds like it was recorded lying down. Held back, understated, and a little lounge, ‘Ten Pound Bag’ is an inoffensive, acoustic affair but with an underlying sense of ‘cool’, a bit like a far better Turin Brakes with a drum machine. It’s strums seem a tad familiar but it’s intent to remain quiet and shimmering, moving but never outstaying its welcome, is nicely done, and actually makes a lot more sense when you know its all down to one guy, rather than 4 or 5 independent personalities battling it out. In this instance it suits being quiet.
That being said, swatches of gentle dance ripple through, especially on ‘Under Your Colours’. Still remaining on the softer side but slightly more up beat, well balanced, and poppy, this track gives a nod to Hot Chip amongst others, whilst still keeping uniquely sparse in its method of execution. The hits aren’t always instant but more than charming enough to want to wait. There is definitely enough promise in the poppier moments to suggest a possible flirt with the mainstream, but with some moments so lo-fi, it seems far more likely to be the soundtrack of a kiss or a cool party, than to be blasting from every radio mercilessly until you want to spew… which is probably for the best…
