Rags & Feathers

The Other Side of Morning (Lucky Number Nine)

By Leigh Rafferty • Sep 23rd, 2008 • Category: long players

Tom Davis has left his garage blues Dead Fly Buchowski past behind him and found something a lot more subtle but much, much sweeter. ‘The Other Side of Morning’ is the debut album as his incarnate Rags & Feathers and proves that it was a worthwhile creative change.

It’s hard to pick out stand out tracks on this album as they are all a perfect example of country soaked folk pop. ‘Silent Movie Starlets’ has beautiful acoustic guitar that has hints of Bob Dylan’s ‘North Country Girl’, it’s whimsical, and innocent, all very endearing.

However, it’s on ‘Carrot and Coriander’ that I was really suckered in. Lush vocal harmonies that will make you melt with lyrics to match, “you remind me of a twisting river out on the plain that can’t make up its mind where lies the sea”. The Rags & Feathers band plays an important role with gorgeous vocal harmonies provided by Andrea Tomlinson and Gram Parsons esque fiddle courtesy of Duncan Thomas.

I would highly recommend this album as a perfect accompaniment to your blanket as the autumn weather dawns on us and the nights get dark Tom Davis will warm your soul with his literary musings and lush arrangements. Stick it on your iPod and skip through the leaves.

(Released on Lucky Number Nine Records on September 22nd)
