Of all the venues used at this year’s festival, Kelvingrove is probably the coolest.
Don’t be fooled by the high ceilings, the marble floors and terraces.
This gig was as intimate as the recent record shop tour that both Colin & Rachel played recently and with a real buzz of excitement.
Tonight we have a trio on stage, completed by Jennifer Austin on keys, Colin on electrics, Rachel on acoustics.
Colin took to the stage first.
His songs take us on a little journey through his formative years on the ‘Isle of Lewis a welcome re-visitation of his Boy Who Trapped The Sun moniker and onto a duet with Rachel.
After the interval Rachel re-emerged with the fanciest hat you’ve ever seen only to find it impossible to put her guitar strap over her head, much to the amusement of the crowd, while blaming Jen for the dare.
Each song would build on the last, Jen joining on the second, Colin rejoining on the fifth.
Making good use of the reverb of the room as Colin had earlier, songs like ‘Breathe Easy’ took on something extra as Rachel’s voice lingered round the room and the halls.
We were treated to some new songs that they recorded in New York (but were actually inspired by misadventures on the Megabus).
Only Sir Roger and ‘Saint’ Elvis seemed immune to the buzz of the night as they watched on from the wings on this special night celebrating special talents and the perfect end to the biggest Celtic Connections yet.
