The first time you hear Punch and the Apostles it makes you feel like your ears are getting a workout, there are so many different styles and sounds going on all at once. They also make you wonder where they’ve been in an industry filled with bland indie bands.
Their debut album comes off the back of a couple of single releases last year and if it’s a sign of what’s to come from them then we’ve all got a lot more to look forward to. With Paul Napier’s destructive lyrics and vocals combined with a band that varies from more classic genres like rock and indie to macabre big band and at one point Mexican Mariachi you never get the same sound twice.
It’s a difficult album to pick out the standout tracks but ‘Can of Beans’ and ‘I’m a Hobo’ were particular favourites on the first listen. The more you listen to the album though you realise there’s not a weak link on it.
If you buy one album this month make it this one, there’s no way you’ll regret it and there’s little chance you’ll have another one like it. Music needs bands like this so let’s hope they’re around for a long time to come.
