Punch and the Apostles

I’m a Hobo (Lucky Number Nine Records)

This, the second single from Glasgow-based Punch and the Apostles, starts out sounding like a big band tune until Paul Napier breaks in with his raucous vocals. Both his singing style and his dark lyrics shouldn’t fit the musical style but then again Punch and the Apostles have already proven that they can’t be shoehorned into any classic musical moulds.

Just to prove that, the song breaks into a quieter jazzier middle section, before breaking back into the riot of earlier.

B-side ‘Can of Beans’ is jazz-influenced and sounds at points like everyone in the band is doing their own thing but it still manages to fit together. Starting out with the line “There comes a time, when you fuck your mind” you’re certainly left in no doubt about what you are in for, then all of a sudden the song slows. It’s not for long though and it suddenly builds to a crescendo with Napier howling in the background.

Punch and the Apostles have proven again that they are one of the best bands in the country right now, certainly no-one can copy their style and let’s hope for more soon.
