MIT
Coda (Half Machine)
Debut album by German electronic artists MIT ranges in style from melodic through haunting to positively urgent. With the lyrics being entirely in German you find yourself focusing heavily on the combination of fantastic beats and synthesisers, unless that is of course that you can speak German yourself.
The lack of understanding of the lyrics certainly doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of the album, in fact the focus on the music really makes you realise how good it is.
The band draw on a number of influences, as expected - NEU!, DAF and Kraftwerk can be heard but on the first track ‘Beispiel’ there is a clear musical resemblance to Faithless track ‘Insomnia.’ It starts with haunting synthesisers and has what can only be described as a tribal drum beat.
The beats really make this album and are as wide ranging in style as the synths. On the second track they take on a military feel and in standout track ‘Kleur’ you can hear a brilliant firecracker style sound. The haunting style synths are also prominent on this track and wouldn’t be out of place in a horror movie.
The Kraftwerk influence becomes more prominent in the last two tracks when the synths take on more of an 80’s style. The last track, also doubling as the title track, is a great classic dance track in the making and would work brilliantly in a festival setting.
This album is certainly worth hearing, don’t be put off by the fact that it’s in German because the music more than makes up for it.
