‘Independent Thought?’ is a scathing broadside against Scottish nationalism from young Aberdonian songsmith Mark McCabe. Personally I don’t agree with Mark’s arch-unionist stance, but fair play to him, it’s nice to hear some politically-engaged songwriting for a change. This song is actually really rousing in a bitter, dispirited kind of way, so even if you don’t agree with the sentiment, you can still admire the strength of the conviction behind it.

B-Side ‘Paranoia’  is a lot more personal, and manages to make those singer-songwriter staples of angst and self-loathing sound fresh and affecting. All in all, this is good, honest songwriting, which would take a heart of stone to dislike. Well worth checking out.
