Machar Granite
Lost in History (self-released)
A lot of Scottish bands seem to be influenced by folk music at the moment, and Edinburgh’s Machar Granite are no exception. Unfortunately for them, their debut ‘Lost in History’ does little to help them stand out from the pack.
The first few songs on the album are on the rockier side of things, with a bit of distorted guitar in the chorus, but they’re too bland and unoriginal to make much of an impression. Things improve later with the more stripped –down offerings, such as ‘Heart of My Existence’ and ‘Body of the Kirk’. The vocals of Eddie Robinson are a bit weak at times, but maybe that’s more to do with the production than any deficiencies on his part.
Some of the songs on here aren’t bad, but I really feel Machar Granite have overstretched themselves by releasing a full album. There are probably enough decent songs for a respectable EP, but over ten songs the quality is spread far too thin.
