Named after a German boy who, legend has it, was raised alone in a locked room, the tone of these four tunes fits the mood – claustrophobic and tense. Hints of goths like Bauhaus blend in with Fall-like rantings, while sonically this trio owe much to Scottish post punks The Scars. Issued on very 1980s cassette, it’s an apt throwback. On ‘Pencil Doings’ guitars chime while threatening vocals and public service announcements urgently burst in. ‘Enigma’ is a flurry of acerbic noise and a female vocal coming from somewhere south of Hades, while ‘Tannoy’ is propelled by pounding drums. However, ‘Dole Inside’s lyrics seem to scream “Judi Dench”. Now that’s weird…
