Jessica Lynn has Kirsty MacColl’s warm gift for expert vocal phrasing. She also has Beth Orton’s way with tasteful electronic experimentation.
If she perhaps ventriloquises too much at some points (Crazy Idea comes off like a collaboration between Carly Simon and Alanis Morrissette) then that can surely be forgiven for the sheer enthusiasm readily evident.
Three tracks in ten minutes and every one strikes fast to make its own mark. You’ll be so sure you’ve missed something that you will be hitting the play button several times over.
For one so young, Lynn’s voice can occasionally be shallow and overreach itself. You’re expecting a little more depth and range sometimes, but it does not always come. Such mere quibbles aside, though, this is a fine, assured and sturdy set which generally bodes well for any forthcoming long player.
