Ives / I Am Blip / Integra TV

Tronic @ Blackfriars (8th February 2008)

There may have been initial disappointment about the withdrawal of Long Range, Phil Hartnoll’s latest project but if one emerging Glasgow club night can handle such a pull-out, it’s definitely the Tronic night. A packed Blackfriars club owed as much to the reputation built up in residencies at the 13th Note and other venues as opposed to the star name that regrettably couldn’t appear. Not only do the promoters of the night have a level of talent in organizing events, they have a talent for music as well as Ives proved. A cutting edge techno duo with a few albums to their name, Ives are masters at setting a scene and yet again their role on the bill enabled the act

Another local talent showing a penchant for musical talent and diversity was I Am Blip who delivered a fine and filthy little cameo, which although at times was restrained and perhaps could have let go a little bit more but the set definitely indicated exactly why he has been earning some decent support slots. In fairness though, the mixture of the subtlety that is allied to the harder hitting floor-filling moments will be exactly what pushes I Am Blip onto bigger audiences and more excited crowds and although first listen is never really enough to gauge the true depth of an act, its fair to say that bigger venues than Blackfriars will play host to the act. The venue was starting to get busy by this point which was good that the non-appearance hadn’t deterred many of the crowd and there was definite excitement building.

A change in the bill is never a bad thing if it introduces a new act to your awareness but if you don’t learn who the act is then it can be a little disappointing and this was the case for us with the next act. A little bit of research hopefully shows that the next act were Integra TV and although they were new to us, they seemed to be going down a storm and the set held a few surprises up its atmospheric and twisted sleeve, definitely need to be checked out in the future and perhaps a bit of prior research will make them sound even better!

Anyone who did miss out on the night due to the cancellation would have missed out on a fantastic night which is fast becoming an institution at a venue which is managing to impress at every turn as well.
