When your music video is goes viral, as happened with Is Tropical’s last single ‘The Greeks’, it can be hard to pull audience focus back to the music. Fortunately Lies, the third single from album Native To, is strong enough to do that.
Their kitschy, synth-driven electro sound juxtaposes deep, gravelly bass and scratchy keys with clear, lifted melodies – created either electronically or by the understated yet defining vocal performance – and samples from nature. These two sides of the spectrum contrast to the point of compliment, highlighting rather than contradicting.
Their sound is distinctive, and their music is engaging – both dance-worthy and meaningful. Surely bright things lie ahead for this trio.
