top band: Sigur Ros

Sigur Ros
The first of many disagreements with the itm? staff picks with Radiohead pushed into third by the plucky Icelanders

1. Sigur Ros 31%
2. Frightened Rabbit 22%
3. Radiohead 18%
4. We Were Promised Jetpacks 14%
5. De Rosa 11%

top female: Emma Pollock

Emma Pollock
How much of a fondness for former band The Delgados has a bearing here is uncertain, but anyone who’s heard her solo material will know that Emma is still a match for the best. Surely it’s just a matter of time before the record-buying public catch up?

1. Emma Pollock 19%
2. Feist 17%
3. Bat For Lashes 16.5%
4. Laura Marling 11%
5. Santagold 10.5%

top male: Malcolm Middleton

Malcolm Middleton
A quieter year release-wise than the previous frenzy of albums and Xmas singles but Malcolm’s star is still rising as he beats off some big names to claim the title

1. Malcolm Middleton 33%
2. Bon Iver 21%
3, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy 20%
4. Jens Lekman 6%
5. Steven Fretwell 4%

top album: Frightened Rabbit

Frightened Rabbit
No surprise to see Frightened Rabbit top an worldwide poll given their display in the likes of Pitchfork, though even beating itm?’s choice of Vampire Weekend into 7th place was particularly… surprising!

1. Frightened Rabbit – The Midnight Organ Fight 39%
2. Radiohead – In Rainbows 17%
3. Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago 12%
4. Glasvegas – Glasvegas 10%
5. British Sea Power – Do You Like Rock Music? 5%

top single: Kings of Leon – Sex on Fire

Kings of Leon
So, a good wash and brush-up can work wonders for a band, as KoL went from mainstream acceptability to being welcomed by the cream of indie cognescenti (that’s you, itm? voters)

1. Kings of Leon – Sex on Fire 21.5%
2. MGMT – Time to Pretend 17%
3. Malcolm Middleton – Blue Plastic Bags – 15%
4. The Hold Steady – Sequestered in Memphis 10%
5. Glasvegas- Daddy’s Gone 8.5%

top newcomer: Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend
And another curiousity of the voting system as Vampire Weekend voters (we presume) saved their ballots for ‘best newcomer’. Which tactic paid off as the critics’ choice in virtually every publication apart from this one (Fleet Foxes) were narrowly dumped into second.

1. Vampire Weekend 22%
2. Fleet Foxes 20.5%
3. The Phantom Band 15%
4. Bon Iver 12%
5. The French Quarter 10%

top live act: We Were Promised Jetpacks

We Were Promised Jetpacks
Another surprise result – perhaps you’ve been following itm?’s not-quite-slavish admiration of the might Jetpacks’ live sets (quite often on the same bill as their second-placed labelmates), but anyone who’s seen them clearly have, like us, been suitably impressed.

1. We Were Promised Jetpacks 23.5%
2. Frightened Rabbit 17%
3. Sigur Ros 16%
4. My Bloody Valentine 10%
5. Radiohead 9%
