We Go Hunting
(4AD)
This is not the iLiKETRAiNS fare I was expecting (fare? – sorry). My experience with them so far suggested an embrace of post rock, albeit distilled to the sub five minute mark – a quick epic for the road if you will. But ‘We Go Hunting’ finds them winding entirely different roads.
Inspired by the mundane barbarism of the Salem Witch Trials the track broods with an atmospheric menace. With that post rock template sitting front and centre in mind I anticipated an lengthy eerie build up to an inevitable cacophonous break. Instead, the vocals honey into the song through a fug of camp and violence. Each phrase is delivered with an arch smile that would curdle butter. Their older material traded on a visceral threat and physical attack of instrumentation. In a way this brutality was easier to deal with, it was situational; it had happened and you knew. This is different, and unnerving sense of lackadaisical tyranny permeates, one you find yourself looking over you shoulder for. It rests on its laurels , and skulks in the corner licking its lips with one eye on the softest part of your neck.
