Coming atcha on an oh-so-voguish 7″ single as well as Soundcloud type shenanigans, this effort by Morgane Lhote is really rather tasty. Bouncy yet sophisticated, pulsing dancefloor fodder yet also for the head…heck, it may even be “motorik disco” as described in the press release. I dunno what that means exactly but it certainly feels right.
Perhaps best known for an extended period in Stereolab, Morgane delivers a very on point mix of soundtrack and groove. Lot of that about at the moment but these two tracks show pedigree and are superior examples. As one would hope from a performer with such a healthy back catalogue.
Like Stereolab there’s some looking back to go forward and ‘Post-Apocalypteacakes’ lifts some of the vibe of New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ and Kraftwerk-style simple keyboards before giving way to a frankly thumping electro monster. Four four beats, Moroder-like bassline and an irresistible waggle to the whole affair. Chimes and kinda moody but totally smile-inducing and begging to be heard on a big system somewhere dark and sweaty.
‘Tracksuit Minotaur’ gets the starometer frothing simply for that title alone. Always rather liked minotaurs and one sporting a tracksuit of his or her choice is a marvellous thought. Luckily it’s a belter of a tune also. Similar meeting of glower and swing. Nice sampled vocal jabbering on about “Witches in trees” [I think] that guarantees confused conversations at 3am in some seething pit of debauchery.
Excellent excellent stuff. Just too short in fact. When that’s an offering’s only shortfall you’re onto a winner.
