Rustbelt Sun
(GFA)
From a halcyon age when Scottish indie bands sang in drawls from some place far far away, strumming guitars and - despite that - singing of places rather closer to home. The GFAs are no different, ‘St Jude’s Parade’ which opens this 11-tracker could be their ‘Killermont Street’ or ‘Jocelyn Square’ or ‘Prospect Street’. You should always open with your best tune and the GFAs have done that - the rest is pleasantly strummy alt.country, though ‘Some Letters Write Themselves’ is an intricate guitar-picked piece but it’s rather too deep south - and I’m not talking Dumfries. This album is mired in the 80s with guitar solos to match - the harmonica kicks in and I’m forced to tune out. For lovers of Lynrd Skynrd, The Eagles, and the darker days of Scottish indie.
