First gig of 2018 is one of the New Year Revolution events at KTWWH– an excellent package of four bands with a couple of BM faves on the bill.
For the dark dank debt-ridden days of January the venue was really quite busy, although combined entourage of 4 different bands may have made up the numbers a wee bit.
First up, Oh Jay played 5 or 6 numbers of rather Orange Juice heavy material, the lead singer’s crooning baritone reminiscent of Edwyn Collins at times. This four-piece have been gigging for a while but tonight they announced it was their last gig – maybe they have run their course but there were some talented guys on stage there.
Next up are Noah Noah, from Edinburgh – they provide some seriously funky workouts on guitar, keyboards, trumpet and drums. Tracks like ‘Everest’ and ‘Cannibal Calling’ are high tempo, groovy and quite commercial. Watch out for these guys…
Next on the bill are BM faves, Aberdeen’s The Little Kicks. This lot manage to combine a Scottish indie vibe with some wider influences including The Beatles, electronica and pure pop. ‘Don’t Get Mad, Get Even’ is a perfect opener, sweet vocals with a shuddering backline and pumping beat. ‘Goodbye Enemies, Hello Friends’ and several other tracks from recent album ‘Shake Off Your Troubles’ really get the crowd going and there can be no stopping them in 2018 – life-affirming!
So headliners Boohoohoo are playing at 11pm after quite a long night already, but they manage to take the mood up another notch or two with their ridiculously catchy electropop. BM is a major fan and to hear the likes of ‘Now Is The Season’ and ‘Fire’ is yet again awesome, with a cheesy cover (‘Time After Time’) somewhere in the middle. 2018 could be another big year for BHH but whatever happens, this finale sent BM back into the night humming, oh crap, that old Cyndi Lauper number, all together now…
