Gavin Thorpe
Out Of Place (IRL)
Young Gavin is a young singer-songwriter type from the West Country and is, according to his bio, “ruggedly handsome”. You know the type; plays acoustic guitar, sings like an angel, universally appealing to the teen listenership of Radio 1 whilst still being dull and inoffensive enough for your parents to listen to on Radio 2.
Before you know it, the £ signs light up the eyes of major label execs and he’s lumped in with tits like James Blunt, James Morrison, Katie Melua and Corinne Bailey Rae, churning out sickeningly banale tripe to sedate the airwaves. Is this what you want, Gavin? Is it?
Thankfully, so far Gavin Thorpe’s blend of David Gray-esque acoustica has NOT gone this way. Yet. He’s still indie and if he uses his powers for good, he can avoid all the banality and focus on good, deep, edgy music. He’s got potential. That way he won’t have to release slow, acoustic covers of people like Justin Timberlake – “Live Lounge style”. (Wow! How original!!!!! Do you think he‘s done that song justice? etc etc)
So, well done Gavin on a very good debut single. Three cheers for…
…Oh, but hang on a minute, what’s this on the B-side? A cover? Of………Justin Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me a River’?
Fuck you Gavin.
