Frightened Rabbit
(Fat Cat)
The first thing you notice about the title track is the anthemic sound and upbeat nature. However, this does not mean everything is taking a turn away from the melancholic indie-pop sound the band have established. Scott’s vocals are present and are still pulling on your heart strings whilst belting out emotion filled lyrics.
However, beneath the upbeat melodies, there’s a more sinister colouring added within the lyrics with lines like “Here’s your shovel, there’s the ground” This shows a definite call back to the morbidity behind some of the lyrics in The Midnight Organ Fight.
The B-side, like many from Frightened Rabbit, is arguably less accessible to those who don’t like downbeat acoustic pop. The improvised percussion creates a lo-fi sound that suits the song’s style. Whilst the aforementioned vocals are in place, the song does appear to lacking proper substance and the punch of the title track.
