Franz Ferdinand / Findo Gask
Stirling Fubar (9th September 07)
There are no easy gigs these days, to paraphrase football pundits – as Alex Kapranos, in his Scotland top circa Argentina ‘78, will have known.
A Sunday night in an unfamiliar town, the band testing out songs from that difficult 3rd album. And, a cracking new band as support – Findo Gask have fine voices and great tunes – making catchy synth music, like a glitchy New Order or the Blue Nile with breakbeats, their highpoint was Va Va Va which comes out next month on the Optimo club’s record label.
Fortunately Alex and friends had nothing to worry about. The new material sounded reliably Franz-like – their rumoured new ’electronic’ direction was pretty much restricted to some extra keyboards from Nick – old but unreleased track Can’t Stop Feeling was boosted by its reworking, though the sound on the 70s funk-tinged Katherine Kiss Me was a bit much. Inevitably it was the old favourites – Matinee and Take Me Out in particular – which got the crowd going. Encore Turn It Up actually was electro and perhaps the best of the new songs, while This Fire saw Alex crowdsurf and eventually become submerged by the fanatical audience. Yes, business as usual for Franz and the new album should be a cracker.
