Remember Postcard Records? This Edinburgh quartet certainly do. That’s no bad thing – the label who brought us seminal acts like Orange Juice and Aztec Camera influenced many bands in the 1980s and 90s. And now this four-piece have taken bits of those groups plus others from the 80s indiepop explosion to make for an accomplished debut full of catchy, heartfelt tunes, like the sparse but harmony-drenched ‘Hey Columbus’, the urgently jerky ‘Black Dress, Black Cab’ and the jangly pure pop of ‘Imaginary Song’. However, closer ‘Endgame’, despite its Edwyn Collins-esque vocal, sees the band’s sound develop into something denser and darker, rounding off a wide-ranging, varied album well worthy of your attention.
