Dumb Instrument

Songs Ya Bass Vol.1 (Hackpen)

Emphasising their Scottishness, previous reviews of DI have rather missed the point. They are obsessed with death. Whether it’s a jaunty requiem for Oor Wullie’s steady decline - “Bob and Soapy are dead… Willie’s got a shadow on his lung” or the rather less fond farewell to Sir Cliff Richard: “death’s not cured by facelifts”. Simply-sung Brechtian tunes augmented by stark piano and eerie fiddle, it is ‘Reverse the Hearse’ which puts them into context as well as jeopardising their careers - if “death is abolished” what would they have left to sing about? However, lines like “punch the guy who makes the wreath that spell out words like ‘Mum’ and ‘Keith’” show that they’re not just facing up to the Grim Reaper, they’re luring him round the back of the Stand Comedy Club for a doing. And we’re all invited along to watch.
