It’s cold and crisp in the Scottish capital with winter stubbornly dragging on as the Electric Circus fills up for an evening with Casual Sex and their sleazy post- punk.
In a carnal carnival featuring support from Collar Up (slightly shambolic piano led pop reminiscent of Deacon Blue) and NAKED (ethereal soundscapes performed in darkness with lasers and a smoke machine), the Glasgow four-piece, led by a lipstick-toting Sam Smith (vocals and guitar), work up a sweat in style.
The band, completed by Edward Wood on guitar, Peter Masson on bass and drummer Chris McCrory, exude the confidence that will soon see them take on the South by Southwest music exposition in Houston, Texas. Kicking off with ‘The Sound of Casual Sex’, their propulsive and jagged, bass heavy sound immediately causes everyone in the room to shake their bits in that awkward, slightly horrified way only a self-aware audience maintaining a respectful distance from the stage can. The band however are appreciative and storm through a set that features Moshi Moshi Singles Club hit ‘Stroh 80’, the dub infused ‘North’ and a song “all about bastards”, ‘The Bastard Beat’.
By ‘New Guts’, drummer McCrory has cut his hand and is bleeding profusely all over his snare drum and set list before ‘We’re All Here Mainly for the Sex’ and ‘Soft School’ wrap things up. They encore with ‘The Shut Out’ by The Walker Brothers. All in, it’s a fantastic performance from a band revelling in their influences to produce depraved anthems that get people dancing. What more could you ask for?
