Five years after his death, a 20-year-old recording of the Glasgow-born folk singer gets a welcome re-release. Between these two events Jansch experienced a renaissance, recording with Pete Doherty, Bernard Butler and Beth Orton, but this recording captures him in the more intimate setting of the London club where he was a regular.
The 16 tracks here showcase his individual guitar style as well as his gravelly vocal. Surprisingly there’s no sign of his ‘signature tune’ ‘Needle of Death’; instead versions of ‘Curragh Of Kildare’ and ‘Lily Of The West’ introduce us to the influences which made him legendary.
