Basia Bulat

In The Night (Rough Trade)

All the way from Ontario, Basia Bulat is, so the PR blub states, a blend of folk and chamber pop. Listening through these three songs I have yet to understand what chamber pop could possibly be however there is a definite 60’s feel to all three tracks. The opener ‘In The Night’ is a skiffle infused folksy sing-along which catches on after a couple of listens. Bulats vocals are not quite as “singular” as her backers would have you believe but when blended with clever backing vocals her songs fill more space than any strum along 60’s folk artist ever could.

‘Before I Knew’ hits on the Motown 60’s feel with handclaps and electric piano riffs before a cover of Sam Cookes ‘Touch The Hem Of His Garment’ closes the EP, its in this song that Bulats vocals rise, and with a dash more feeling and creativity she finally lets loose. Another pretty face on the CD sleeve but I am not really sure the 60’s pastiche works.
