The opening and title track to this short player, ‘Baby I’m Yours’, ambles by in cutie, anorak blandness, with a passing nod to the Smiths, and perfunctory jangle.
Paul Burch (singer, song-writer, guitarist, drummer, erstwhile member of Kurt Wagner’s country-soul collective) cuts a rather unassuming figure and comes across rather timid and lonely up on stage by himself. His talking between songs is warm but slight and serves to further this impression.
Some old dear flailing her arms around resolves to stand uncomfortably close to me before attempting to dance a jig on my feet. In the meantime a drunken, middle-aged couple in the middle of the hall decide on a screaming match – which impressively comes close to drowning out the three pipers giving it laldy [...]
Another night at Celtic Connections and another festival favourite showcases some new material (and upsets a few fans along the way).
