The One Thousand Nine Hundred and Nineties debut album arrives on my doorstep with a press release that states 1990s have been “name checked by everyone from Beth from The Gossip, Love Foxx from CSS and Kate Jackson from The Long Blondes, and all of The Klaxons”, well whoopdy-bloody-doo, well done lads, you must be so proud, every ‘here today gone tomorrow’ band of the present like your ditties. However, amidst all the NME hype and Nu-Rave nonsense these great pretenders may be on to something when giving their props to the Glasgow trio, because 1990s have an abundance of party-pumping indie tunes that pretty much blows them all away in one foul swoop, well maybe not CSS, but certainly the others.
‘Cookies’ is the sound of Richman, Roxy and Iggy throwing the biggest and best party in all the world, with beautiful women, mountains of drugs and gallons of cherry cola to wash it all down with. “You made me like it”, “You’re supposed to be my friend” and latest single “See you at the lights”, with their sexy chords and pouting lyrics are destined to get dancefloors bouncing in every indie club around the country for years to come, and rightfully so. 1990s will undoubtedly have their critics, some folks will wince at the simplicity of their one-dimensional sound, and others may not be able to stomach some of the obtuse lyrical observations, not too mention wearing their influences firmly on their sleeves. However let’s put the cynicism on the shelf. 1990s are all about the good times, and unless your ears are painted on, you should definitely be having a fuckin’ good time when listening to this record!
