Remember Sleeper? Course not. A female fronted band from ye olde Britpop times, when the mere fact that a band had a girl on vocals wwas something of a novety, and all such acts got lupmed in with the same tarry brush.
Remember Kleenex? Course not. The Slits? Ah, now you’re talking. Aggi Doom take all the best bits of all the bands – not the 90s ones, the late 70s – and particularly on ‘Head’ blend Kleenex and The Slits (and Au Pairs, Delta 5 etc etc) to great effect – a tune that demands all the cliches like ‘angular’, ‘spiky’ and ‘grrrl’ to sum it up.
‘Cakewalk’ is a slower number, ballady and almost wall-o-noise in a sense, as we go back to those other female-fronted acts of the Spector era, only with nervy, ragged guitar and doomy bass and drums. A very promising debut from a bunch of girls who could be headed for the top.
