Knowing that Lenzie Moss bandleader Finlay Macdonald has spent time playing alongside Scottish indie-pop royalty in Teenage Fanclub and BMX Bandits should give you a fair idea what to expect from their latest single. It’s funny, really; for a city that considers itself lucky if it sees 3 weeks of decent weather a year, Glasgow has long held a reputation for churning out sunkissed pop nuggets like this at an alarming rate. ‘Let’s Take the Day Off’ is a delectable serving of jangle-pop as only a native Scotsman could make it, a paean to spending the day foregoing all adult responsibility and doing only what your heart desires.
With its polite, tambourine-assisted beat, cooing female backing vocals and its namedropping of Jackie Trent and Dominic Hide, the whole thing veers perilously close to the realm of twee. Whilst, this isn’t always necessarily a bad thing, some may find themselves recoiling in horror at a few of the track’s more cutesy couplets. Like all the best songs of it’s kind, ‘Let’s Take the Day Off’ knows better than to overstay its welcome, not even surpassing the three minute mark. It’s a wise move, and one that ensures the song’s replay value. It ends with a deliriously catchy swirling guitar melody that lingers in the brain long after the needle meets the runout groove.
